Message from the Chairman

The 27-State Europe is now a historical reality, creating new potential for development throughout the European Union, and defining in large part the development prospects for Greece over the coming years.

The Greek Food Industry has every reason to be proud of its achievements, after successfully meeting the challenges of the unification of the European markets and international competition within Greece. It is therefore certain that the Greek Food Industry must look outside the borders for room to develop. At the dawn of the 21st century, isolation is a luxury no country can afford. Economies are now global and there are numerous opportunities waiting to be exploited.

I should stress that by placing their name on thousands of products, Greek businesses demonstrate daily their respect for themselves and their consumers first of all, and for the society and its institutions in general.

In this setting, the goals of the Food Industry are fixed and manifest:

  • The formation of a favourable climate for improving competitiveness in the industry and strengthening its export orientation.
  • Products of consistently high quality and safety, through research and innovation.
  • The formulation of a national strategy for a balanced diet and healthy living.
  • Maintaining consumer trust in its products.
  • Long-term respect for the environment, in order to achieve sustainable development which is beneficial for society as a whole.

I believe that, in the period following the expansion of the European Union, our efforts to turn the opportunities and challenges we face into potential for development will be successful only if we obtain the approval of our social partners and of the State.
